Forty years of ignoring our basic duty as citizens led directly to the twin disasters we’re seeing in the White House and Congress. Toss in the ongoing legislative tragedies in many local and state governments and America faces a crisis of massive proportions.
The Grassroots is coming alive in a way not seen since the 1960s, yet the key remains directing that emotion and passion toward change at the ballot box. Turnout for the last general election was 55 percent. Half that for primaries. Much less than half in some districts.
Our chaos continues to be ironically self-administered and lasting long beyond reason.
The midterm elections present a unique opportunity, because of low turnout and a lack of challengers, to send incumbents packing in all 435 seats in the House and 33 seats in the Senate during a single fifty-state primary season. Gerrymandering takes care of the rest in November.
We can choose to stop participating in our own economic and political subjugation simply by showing up to vote with metronomic certainty. I am certain most Americans would be shocked at how good things could get if politicians were more afraid of angry voters than corporate donors.
Problem remains the anticipated primary turnout for 2018 based on 2010 numbers is 20 percent. Less than that in many districts.
Democracy can’t survive these numbers, no matter who is in the White House.
